Shenzhen has seen a rise in the number of drink driving cases in the weeks since the start of the World Cup in South Africa on June 11.
Police arrested 82 drivers for drunk driving and 208 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol between June 11 and 27, Shenzhen traffic police said yesterday (June 28).
On Sunday night alone, following the match between England and Germany, police arrested 29 drivers, accounting for 36 percent of the total, for drunk driving.
The number of drivers found driving under the influence since the start of the World Cup came to 290 in total — more than all the drink drivers caught in May.
In May, police clocked 257 drink driving cases and 112 were arrested for drunk driving.
Police expect a further rise in the number of drink driving cases as the World Cup finals approach.
Among those caught driving under the influence, two-thirds showed a blood alcohol content of more than 40 mg/100ml. Among those classified as drunk drivers — those with a blood alcohol content of more than 80mg/100ml — 75 percent had a blood alcohol content exceeding 90mg/100ml.
To curb the rise in drink driving offenses, police will deploy 100 teams per day to check roads near hotels, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues and remind drivers not the take the risk.
