Shenzhen saw a 3.6 percent year-on-year rise in the consumer price index (CPI) last month, which was mainly the result of food price increases.
City food price rose by 7.8 percent last month over the same period last year and by 1.1 percent over June, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported Saturday (Aug 14).
Only the price of cooking oil fell last month while the prices of common food like eggs and vegetables rose, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Friday.
Fresh vegetables and nuts led the price hike, partly due to the frequent storms last month, the Daily quoted experts as saying.
As well as food, there were also price rises for cigarettes, clothing, home medical apparatus and entertainment last month, according to the statistics.
However, city transport and telecommunication costs fell by 0.5 percent last month over the same period of last year.
The price of mobile phones was down 20.8 percent last month over last year.
The city CPI increased by 2.7 percent in the past seven months compared with the same period last year.
