Compared with ring routes in previous legs in Guangdong, the route in Shantou was almost straight along the coast.
Situated in the southeast of Guangdong and adjacent to the South China Sea, Shantou boasts a long history of foreign trade and is known as a "trading port of over one hundred years". It was opened up in 1861 and designated as one of the first four Special Economic Zones in China in 1981.
